About The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi (celebrated the first Friday after Easter) is on the eastern part of Samos and has a great view of the sea-stripe separating Samos from Turkey.
History The monastery was built in 1756 near the remains of an older monastery. The church is built according to the Byzantine patterns (dome-basilica). The dome is based on four columns originating from the ancient temple of Militos. The inner part of the temple is decorated with wall-paintings.
Descriptions The gold-plated woodcut icon-screen built in 1802 is very beautiful as well as the bishop's throne and the portable silver icon which presents Mother Mary as a life-giving fountain. The doors of the temple are made of tiny wooden parts which symbolize the 365 days of the year.
The monastery used to accommodate monks but from 2002 it is inhabited by four nuns whose main occupation is hagiography. Today most of the chambers are abandoned.
The monastery is 7 kilometers outside the city of Samos in the valley of Vlamari. The beauty of the route and the view are astonishing.
