The VW Beetle of Bars - Not Flash, but Reliable The Welcome Inn looks like it was constructed from 1970s carpet remnants. The sort of place where revolutionaries might plan acts of sabotage. Located in what used to be a rough neighbourhood - and brimming with genuine character - it's hardly surprising a load of arty types come here looking for a 'real world' experience. Of course they end up drinking with other arty types, which is good because it reduces their chances of being hospitalised. Even if you haven't been in years, it's just good to know that the Welcome Inn exists; it represents a scruffiness that Dublin has turned its back on. I'm sure its welcome won't last forever, and when it is eventually demolished, I'll wish I had spent more time here, talking shit with art students and trying to avoid alco-psycho-barflys.
