The National Railway Museum (NRM) in York forms part of the British National Museum of Science and Industry The National Railway Museum in York, England is the largest railway museum in the world, responsible for the conservation and interpretation of the British national collection of historically significant railway vehicles and other artefacts. The Museum contains an unrivalled collection of locomotives, rolling stock, railway equipment, documents and records.

The National Railway Museum   contains a collection of over 100 locomotives and nearly 200 other items of rolling stock , together with many hundreds of thousands of other items of railway historical interest (down to a lock of Robert Stephenson 's hair) displayed in three large halls of a former motive power depot next to the East Coast Main Line , near York railway station . The permanent display includes "Palaces on Wheels", a collection of Royal Train coaches from Queen Victoria 's early trains to those used by Queen Elizabeth II up to the 1970s .

The National Railway Museum was established on its present site in 1975 , when it took over the former British Railways Collection located in Clapham , and the York Railway Museum located elsewhere in the city, since when the collection has continued to grow. It is now the largest museum of its type in the world, with 750,000 visitors annually

Long-stay parking is available on site at £7.00 per day. Free disabled parking.

Dogs

Dogs are not admitted except for support dogs for blind and deaf people.

Facilities for Visitors with Disabilities

Ramps and chair lifts provide access to most of the Museum. The recent instalment of automatic doors to the entrances and a lift to the balcony gallery has made further improvements to access. Wheelchairs may be borrowed from the entrances, but to ensure that you are not disappointed, we would advise you to contact Claire Evans, Customer Services Manager on (01904) 686274 to reserve a wheelchair in advance. Special parking for disabled drivers is available free of charge by the city entrance to the Museum.

Support dogs are admitted for blind and deaf people.
