In 1983, when the town of Avignon decides to divide museum and library, it undertakes vast work of refitting.

The reopening of the museum in 1996 allows the deployment of the collections through the occupation of the space monopolized hitherto by the library.

LE Musée Calvet is devoted to the fine arts, it is a museum classified by the State for the diversity and the richness of its collections. It occupies the hotel of Villeneuve-Martignan, which is for much the most beautiful private mansion of Avignon.

This striking museum is housed in a neoclassic mansion surrounded by romantic gardens and green courtyards. The 18th century building provides an ideal backdrop for the collection of antique silver, decorative arts, sculpture, and paintings. Don't miss the collection of oils by artists such as Corot, Manet, and Brueghel.

The Calvet Museum in Avignon has been the venue from 25 March last of a major exhibition devoted to the pantings of the Northern European Schools of Painting : Flemish, Dutch and German. A collection of 90 paintings of those schools enables the visitor to journey from the XV to XIX centuries in the company of the masters of Antwerp, Cologne, Brussels, Haarlem and Amsterdam.
