Housed since the late 19th century in the basement of the Palais Rohan, the Musée Archéologique is one of the richest in France in its field, "National Antiquities". Reopened in 1992 following complete refurbishment of its layout and displays, it relates the distant past of Alsace, from Prehistory (600,000 years ago) to the dawn of the Middle Ages (800 A.D.). Its collections are regularly enriched with the results of archeological excavations in Strasbourg and Alsace under the aegis of the Regional Archeological Service.

The Collections
The exceptional richness of the Musée Archéologique de Strasbourg, one of the most important in France in terms of the extent and diversity of its collections, is not the result of a series of haphazard events, but rather of long and patient collection work dating from the mid-19th century. The museum has been closely associated with regional archeological research since that time, through the tireless work of the Société pour la Conservation des Monuments Historiques d'Alsace, a learned society established in 1855 by decree of Emperor Napoleon III.
