Nobody knows for sure when this monastery was founded, but what

we can see is how it has shaped the local history. Cardeña is infamous for

200 monks who were martyred by the Muslims during the Arab invasion

towards the end of the 9th Century.

Another resounding fact is the relationship with Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar ,

El Cid who left his wife and children under the protection and hospitality

of this monastery to live in exile.
