Lisbon Zoo (Jardim Zoologico de Lisboa)

Lisbon Zoo has been located at the heart of the Portuguese capital for well over a century. There are over 2000 animals of 400 species here, making the zoological collection of Lisbon Zoo one of the biggest and most astounding in the entire world. Moreover, this zoo is a great place to learn a lot about animals. Zoo directors maintain that focus is placed on preservation and reproduction of nearly extinct species, and that the animals live in habitats very close to their natural ones. The zoo is comprised of several venues, such as the Reptile Enclosure, Exotic Birds, Little Farm, Dolphin Bay, Cable Car and many more. A recent addition is Animax, a family attraction. There are extensive leisure facilities like cafes and cozy restaurants. You can photograph the animals to help you remember the time you had at Lisbon Zoo. Not that you're likely to forget. The cable cars offer a bird's eye view of areas inhabited by lions, apes, bears and wolves, as well as a panoramic view of the city skyline. You can soar into the sky with the animals under your feet. Afterwards you can visit the Reptile House, an ecosystem with climate control, which exhibits frightening tropical cobras, rattlesnakes and more. There are also lizards and tarantulas.

The bears here once lived in the northern mountain ranges of Portugal. The monkeys scuttle about, looking for food and squealing. There are hippos and elephants. Baby hippos weigh around 50 kg at birth, and baby elephants - 100 kg. Hippos give birth and breastfeed their young underwater. There is a hill on the territory of the zoo, atop which is a small forest, home to a lonely Iberian wolf. You will also see dolphins in the bay, a camel and flamingoes.

There are many fascinating attractions in the great city of Lisbon - St. George's Castle, Bairro Alto, the Gulbenkian Museum, the Oceanarium, Alfama and many more. Do not let the zoo be the first one you visit. You may be left with the wrong impression of the city as a whole.
