About Kemp Town
Kemp Town is one of the alternative hearts of the city alongside the North Laine. With Britain's biggest gay population and home to musicians, creatives and many of Brighton's more eccentric residents there is no shortage of life. Even a trip to the local supermarket can seem like a trip to the circus if you're not used to it.

Kemp Towns North Laine is full of shops and cafes, the streets can seem ordinary in comparison to the brightly coloured facades in Sydney or Gardener Street. But Kemp Town is more about its people than its buildings or shops.

Head from the Old Steine up St. James' Street, the main artery of Kemp Town. Upper St James Street has a number of second hand shops and a flea market and further on is Kemp Town Village with some great pubs, deli's, cafes and a wonderful bookshop. Kemp Town seafront stretches as far as the marina and is much quieter than central Brighton. Peter Pan's playground is great for kids.

The private gardens in front of the buildings, called the Kemp Town Enclosures, are owned by the Kemp Town Enclosures Limited which works alongside the Kemp Town Society. 

Membership of the Kemp Town Society is £5 per household per year.

History
Kemp Town is the estate conceived and built by the visionary Thomas Kemp from 1823 until 1850. The estate includes Sussex Square, Lewes Crescent, Arundel Terrace and Chichester Terrace above Brighton's Black Rock adjacent to Brighton Marina.

The Kemp Town Society exists to secure for the public benefit the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest in the area comprising Kemp Town Conservation Area as designated under Section 227 of the Town & Country Planning act 1971.

Bristling with activity, day and night, Kemp Town epitomises the spirit of Brighton, lively, colourful and slightly seedy. This area of town is full of good pubs, antique and junk shops, B&Bs and interesting churches. At the eastern end are Sussex Square and Lewes Crescent, stunning white Regency town houses which have been the home to, among others, Lewis Carroll and Ozzy Osbourne. Kemp Town is also the spiritual home of the city's large gay and lesbian community.
