JORVIK

A visit to JORVIK is the perfect way to discover Viking-Age York, one of the most fascinating periods of the city's dramatic history.

Jórvík was the Viking name for the English city of York and the kingdom centred there.

Jórvík became the capital of a flourishing small kingdom when the war-leader, Guthrum, headed for East Anglia, while Halfdan Wide-Embrace of Sjaelland and Uppsala took the York throne in AD 876. The kingdom covered the three Ridings of Yorkshire and extending into Westmorland and Lancashire, often employing Anglian local kinglets.

The York Archaeological Trust took the decision to recreate the excavated part of Jórvík on the site, peopled with figures and sounds as well as pigsties, fish market and latrines to bring it fully to life using innovative interpretative methods. The Jórvík Viking Centre opened in April 1984 and proved to be a major visitor attraction. In 2001, the centre was refurbished and enlarged.

Directions: JORVIK is situated in the Coppergate Shopping area close to the centre of pedestrian-friendly York.

By Road

From the south:
Take the M1 or A1 northbound, then take the A64 to York (look for brown & white tourism sign)

From the north:
From the A1, take the A59 or the A64 to York (look for the brown & white tourism sign).

From the west:
From the M62, join the M1 northbound then take the A64 to York. Once in York, we recommend using the city's Park & Ride service to travel into the city centre. By Rail
Situated on the East Coast Mainline, there are direct rail services to York from many of the UK's main cities, including a fast and frequent service from London King's Cross. JORVIK is a 15-minute walk from York Station.

By Coach

By Bicycle
