The 18th-century Church of St. Anthony sits just off the waterfront. The altar is decorated with some of Portugal's most notable baroque gilt carvings, created with gold imported from Brazil. Begun in the 17th century, they were damaged in the earthquake but subsequently restored. What you see today represents the work of many artisans -- each, at times, apparently pursuing a different theme.
Attached to the Museum of Lakes, the Church of Santo António is one of more the former-libris notables of the city. The probable date of its initial construction places during the reign of Dom João V, but terramoto of 1755 for the commander of the Regiment of Infantry of Lakes was reconstructed after. Perhaps therefore it exists, in the altar, an image of Santo António with military band.
The baroque style is clear in the façade, the sineiras towers and the interior, of tecto vaults. It possesss an only ship and richly is decorated in blue and white tiles and golden cut, whose esplendor it was valid the denomination, in the English tourist scripts, of “Golden Church”. It is National Monument.
