City Center, Lourdes

Lourdes, a town in southwestern France at the foot of the Pyrenees, is famous for its Roman Catholic shrine. Lourdes, originally a small market town, has developed into a major place of Christian pilgrimage since it became famous in 1858 for the Apparition of Our Lady to Bernadette Soubirous(now St. Bernadette).

Lourdes, France, has become famous world wide due to the pilgrimage many people make to the area due to events said to have occurred in the past. It is the spiritual sanctuaries that bring people pouring into the historical city.

History

It was the events of 11 February 1858 that changed the future of the small rural town of Lourdes hidden in the Pyrénées.

The city of Lourdes, in the central part of the French Pyrenees, has been damaged several times by earthquakes, in particular in 1660 and 1750, two events which partly destroyed the city.

On 18th January 1862, the Bishop of Tarbes, Mgr. Laurence, spoke on behalf of the church and confirmed ‘The Virgin Mary has truly appeared to Bernadette Soubirous’.

Today Lourdes is one of the most visited places of pilgrimage, a place of universal meeting and sharing, where thousands of volunteers accompany the hope of the sick and the handicapped who form the “Heart” of official pilgrimages. The serenity and tranquility of Lourdes has brought peace of mind to many pilgrims.

Geography & Demographics

Lourdes is a town situated in the Southwest of France in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Lourdes has a fine location, close to several other charming Pyrenean cities and villages and close to the Spanish border.

Today With a population of only approximately 17,000 people, Lourdes has become the second-most-visited city in France But is able to take in some 5 million pilgrims and tourists every year.

Lourdes, France is a bustling Pyrenees village, best known for famous Virgin Mary sightings, that is central to several other great cities and attractions.

Lourdes, France is also the second most popular tourism city in all of France, attracting five million pilgrims annually from throughout the globe to the cave where a peasant girl had several Virgin Mary sightings.

It is the perfect destination for the adventure traveler, with numerous outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and closer by. The Pyrenean cities of Pau and Tarbes are a few minutes away. The charming small spa village of Argeles-Gazost is about a 15-minute drive away, and it also features a casino.
