In the last thirty years the tourist industry has had a major influence on the town’s economy. After the invasion in 1974 from Turkey, Famagusta lost all the revenue from the tourist industry and Ayia Napa was born. Before this, Ayia Napa was a small fishing village with a population of 200. Today the locals still find time to practice their occupation of farming and fishing despite its modern growth and influence.
