Cripta del Cristo

The Crypt or Church of Santísimo Cristo (Most Holy Christ) is the oldest preserved building in Santander, construction having began in the 13th century. It is located under the cathedral. The interior is unusual, with low ceilings only four meters high, and an overall inside space of just 31 by 18.5 meters. There are three naves, one of which revealed evidence of Roman occupation, as well as the remains of the San Emeterio and San Celedonio Abbey. These excavations have now been covered over, but the use of glass flooring means you can still see through to the older structures underneath the existing building .

Guided tours are available during the summer months. Mass is conducted: M-Sa 1:15p, 6p, 8:30p; Su 9a, 10a, 11a, Noon, 1p, 6p, 8:30p; tourist visits not permitted during mass.
