The Citadel of Montpellier is an old fortified town of Montpellier. It was built between 1624 and 1627, on the order of the king Louis XIII to supervise the city after several revolts. Become the Joffre Barracks to the XX E century, it accomodates since 1958 the school city of the college and Joffre college.

History 
In 1621, the king of France Louis XIII came with a MATER troop the revolt from the Protestants under the command from the duke from Montmorency. The king decided the construction of a royal citadel near to the city to supervise it like his area, where an important Protestant population saw.

The fortified town was built between 1624 and 1627 between the fortifications in the east of the old city and the plain of Lez, coastal river.
 
School History
During the XIX century, the college of young boys of Montpellier appeared too small: created in 1804 close to the Esplanade, in the buildings of the old college of Jesuits, the college and its pupils were dispersed on two other sites in the north of the Escutcheon.
