Before he set off for Florence and Rome, a young Perugino protégé named Raphael Sanzio made his first attempt at fresco in this chapel in 1505.

Though damaged, the upper half of this work, with the Holy Trinity surrounded by saints seated on clouds, shows the germ of Raphael's budding genius and his eye for composition and naturalism. By 1521, Raphael had died young, and his now-septuagenarian teacher, Perugino -- just 2 years from the grave himself, with his talent fading -- finished the scene with six posed saints along the bottom.

The rest of the church, which was built in the 11th century by Camaldulensian monks on the site of an old pagan temple, is usually closed.
