Chateau Maucaillou

Moulis is located midway between Margaux and St-Julien and contains some of the oldest vineyard sites to be found in the Médoc. Château Maucaillou can trace the history of its vineyards back to the 16th century. Its handsome château was built in 1875 and the property has been owned by the Dourthe family since 1929. These days Philippe Dourthe is at the helm.

Maucaillou's soil contains blue and pink pebbles, and the attractive chateau building is famous for its red and ochre colours. Chateau Maucaillou makes an outstanding, fruity wine.

There are now 62 hectares of vineyards, which lie on crests of quaternary alluvium and günt gravel. They are planted with 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and the wine is then aged in oak barriques (35-65% new, depending on the vintage) for 18 months.

The wine is renowned for its smoothness, subtlety and elegance and has traditionally been perceived as early maturing. Recent vintages have seen the wine possessing more depth of fruit and a firmer and more tannic structure. A property on the up.

Bright raspberry and strawberry character follow through to a rich, fruity palate, with soft, silky tannins and a long finish. Best Maucaillou in years. Score range: 89-91 Wine Spectator.
