The Cathédrale Notre-Dame is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Strasbourg, France. It is widely considered to be among the finest examples of "high", or late, gothic architecture. Erwin von Steinbach is credited for major contributions from 1277 to his death in 1318.

At 142metres, it was the world's tallest building from 1625 to 1847. It remained the tallest church in the world until 1880, when it was surpassed firstly by Cologne Cathedral and then the 161 metre Ulm Münster. Today it is the fourth-tallest church in the world.

An Islamist plot to bomb the building has been prevented in 2000 by German police.

History
Évêché of Strasbourg appears in IVe xiècle. It knows an eclipse during the invasion by Alamans before being reconstituted in VIIe. It is then vast évêché which includes/understands all Jura, and this, until second half of VIIIe century. A first cathedral is built in VIIe century. A Carolingian building succeeds to him. After the plundering of this one in 1002, a new cathedral is built since 1015. Its construction continues until 1055.Après a storm which cuts down the arrow (1074) and two fires without gravity (1136 and 1140) occur two other fires (1150 and 1176) which make necessary a rebuilding.

Restorations are undertaken as of Ier Empire. The principal restorer is Gustave Klotz of 1838 to 1880. German Joseph Knauth repairs the first pillar of the nave which threatened of effrondrer. Work is completed by French in 1926.
