For 500 years, this cathedral has claimed to possess the Holy Grail, the chalice Jesus used at the Last Supper; it's on display in a side chapel. The subject of countless legends, the Grail was said to have been used by Joseph of Arimathea to collect Jesus's blood as it dripped from the cross. It looms large in Sir Thomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur, Tennyson's Idylls of the King, and Wagner's Parsifal.

Although this 1262 cathedral represents a number of styles, including Romanesque and baroque, Gothic predominates. Its huge arches have been restored, and in back is a handsome domed basilica. It was built on the site of a mosque torn down by the Catholic monarchs.

After seeing the cathedral, you can scale an incomplete 47m-high (155-ft.) Gothic tower -- known as Miguelete (Micalet in local dialect). It affords a panoramic view of the city and the fertile huerta beyond. Or visit the Museo de la Catedral, where works by Goya and Zurbarán are on exhibit.
