Andorra, Ordino

Ordino is one of the parishes of Andorra. It contains one of the main Andorran communities, El Serrat, as well as Ansalonga, Somàs, La Cortinada, Llorts, Segudet and Arans. It is home to the Sorteny National Park.

It has a population of 3,066, as of 2005.

History

Ordino has a distinguished history and has played an important role in the development of the country. In earlier times it was the Parish of the powerful Andorra cases pairals or elders’houses. Of the noble mansions the most important are that which was the birthplace of Don Guillem Areny de Plandolit, that of the Fiter-Riba family (where Mossén Cinto Verdaguer lived).

Culture

The Casa de la Vall, the Santuari de Meritxell, and the typical villages of Pal and Ordino are other sights not to be missed. The Casa de la Vall, a traditional home of the nobility, with Gothic frescoes reproducing scenes from the Passion of Christ, was built at the end of the 16th century.

Economy

Ordino is their tranquil and serene opposite, a haven of peace. Ordino contains five "quarts" or villages: Sornàs, Ansalonga, La Cortinada, Llorts and Ordino itself. This village was one of the most important frontier points in Andorra.
